Computer-Assisted Surgery

Computer-assisted surgery is a technique that is used in cases where there is bone in both jaws.  Before the surgery, the doctor plans the dental implants and a surgical ferule is manufactured that allows the patient to have fixed teeth after inserting the implants.

Benefits of the Operation

Computer-assisted surgery enables a detailed study to be made of the patient's bones and therefore, makes it possible to plan the most appropriate rehabilitation, without "cutting the gum". Fixed teeth can be installed immediately after surgery.

This technique improves all three areas of the patient's quality of life: functional, psychological and social. They are minimally invasive techniques, which can be performed even without needing to cut the gum and without pain (guided surgery), as they are also fast, safe and predictable. Numerous scientific studies corroborate that the success rate is almost 100%. It has been documented that the use of immediate function techniques increases therapeutic acceptance and minimises post-surgical discomfort for patients.

Medical-technical description

In essence, this surgery is based on the real possibility of planning a specific rehabilitation with dental implants on a virtual model of the patient's bones, which is obtained from a bone scan (CAT). Based on this planning, and using a series of templates, minimally invasive surgery (without incisions) is performed, and the fixed dental or maxillofacial fixed prosthesis can be fitted once it has finished.

About the operation

The surgery is carried out in the operating theatre under general anaesthetic, and in the majority of cases takes approximately two hours. The patient stays in hospital for at least one day.

Between 24 and 48 hours after the surgery, the patient is fitted with a fixed provisional prosthesis and the patient can now enjoy his or her fixed teeth.

Before the operation

  • The patient must have a dental panoramic X-ray (orthopantomogram) and a zygoma CAT (of the orbit) to enable a suitable diagnosis to be made.
  • The patient has a blood test, chest X-ray and electrocardiogram.
  • The patient is admitted to hospital at eight o'clock in the morning and must therefore not eat or drink anything for eight hours before the surgery.
  • You must remove all metal objects during the operation (rings, bracelets, earrings, body piercings, etc).

Post-operative care

  • For the first few days after the operation you may have some discomfort or swelling in the face, which will disappear when you take the medicine prescribed by the surgeon in two to three days.
  • You may also notice some slight bleeding and a low fever, which will also disappear quickly.
  • For the first 24 hours you must only eat soft, cold food, You must not rinse your mouth or clean your teeth and you must apply ice wrapped in cloths to your face.
  • After the first 24 hours you must rinse your mouth with water and salt for ten days, eat a diet you can tolerate, apply dry heat to the swollen area and once you are brushing your teeth normally, use BEXIDENT POST.
